Our Beloved Pastor

Rev. Anthony L Hughes was born and raised in Chicago Illinois, where he was baptized at Lincoln Memorial U.C.C. Church at a young age.

Rev. Hughes began his pastoral career in 1993.  He served Mount Olive AME Church in Emporia, Kansas for five years, and Grant Chapel AME Church in Wichita, Kansas for three.  In 2001, Rev. Hughes was assigned to St. Paul AME in San Bernardino, CA.  There he served as President of the Inland Empire AME Minister’s Alliance, and also was selected, along with his wife, to create a Prayer Ministry for the Fifth District.

In 2006, Pastor Hughes was assigned to Bethel Memorial AME Church of San Diego, where over 100 souls were added. By God’s Grace, his ministry became international, as he was invited to minister in Barbados, Kenya, Jamaica, and other foreign nations as well.

In 2013, Hughes was assigned to St. Paul AME Church of Berkeley, CA. There he started an economic campaign which featured a $1,185,000 refinance of the church. Also, he was elected Vice President of the Berkeley Black Ministers Alliance, and to the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Center Federal Credit Union. Hughes was also appointed to serve the California Conference Board of Examiners as Dean, overseeing training for prospective AME ministers. And, under his leadership, St Paul is currently seeking to rebuild the older building of the campus, creating much needed low cost housing, and new administrative space for the church.
